Bybit's Pre-IPO Perpetuals: A New Frontier or a Pricing Mirage?

Bybit just added Unitree Robotics and Moonshot AI to its Pre-IPO perpetual futures lineup. On the surface, it's a bold expansion into private market derivatives. But the real story isn't the product—it's the price oracle.

Context: The Pre-IPO Perpetual Mechanism

Pre-IPO perpetuals are synthetic contracts that track the equity valuation of private companies. Unlike Bitcoin or Ether, which trade on liquid spot markets, Unitree Robotics and Moonshot AI have no public price. Their valuation is derived from private funding rounds, secondary market whispers, and media reports. Bybit uses a mark price based on these opaque inputs.

This is not a new concept. BitMEX launched similar contracts for SpaceX, Stripe, and Anthropic in late 2024. Bybit is following the same playbook, but with a twist: they are targeting Chinese AI and robotics firms that are heavily hyped but thinly traded. The product is a derivative of a derivative—a bet on a narrative, not a liquid asset.

Core: The Pricing Black Box

From my audit experience, the most dangerous part of any financial product is the price discovery mechanism. For Pre-IPO perpetuals, the challenge is existential.

First, there is no continuous spot market. The mark price must be interpolated from sporadic funding rounds or secondary transactions that occur weeks apart. When a private company's valuation jumps 50% overnight on a new funding announcement, the perpetual contract will gap violently. The funding rate—designed to anchor the derivative to the underlying—cannot function properly because there is no arbitrage mechanism. Traders cannot short or long the underlying stock to capture the spread. They are stuck with a synthetic price that may drift far from fair value.

Second, the price source is centralized. Bybit likely uses a combination of third-party data providers and internal models to generate the index. There is no on-chain oracle, no transparency, no way for users to verify the inputs. This is the antithesis of the 'trustless' ethos that crypto claims to uphold.

Third, settlement risk is non-trivial. If an IPO is delayed or canceled, the contract may never mature. The perpetual becomes a zombie. Bybit's terms may allow them to force-settle at a discretionary price, exposing users to counterparty risk.

Contrarian: Innovation or Illusion?

The bullish narrative is that Pre-IPO perpetuals democratize access to private equity. Retail traders can now get exposure to high-growth companies before they go public. That sounds empowering. But the reality is more concerning.

This product does not expand the pie of available liquidity. It slices already-scarce private market data into a futures contract. The result is a derivative that is less about price discovery and more about speculation on news headlines. The same small user base that trades Bitcoin perpetuals is now being offered a new way to gamble on unverifiable valuations.

Bulls react. Bears reflect. We build. But what are we building here? A system that relies on centralized trust for pricing, then calls itself 'decentralized'? That is a contradiction. The code may execute, but the covenant—the social contract of fair and transparent markets—is broken.

Takeaway: Verify the Code, Trust the Community

Bybit's Pre-IPO perpetuals are a test case for the entire crypto derivatives industry. Can we create synthetic exposure to real-world assets without sacrificing transparency? The answer so far is no. The pricing black box remains the Achilles' heel.

Tech changes. Values remain. As a builder in this space, I see a market that is hungry for novelty but forgets the fundamentals. Before you trade a Pre-IPO perpetual, ask yourself: where does the price come from? If you cannot answer that question with confidence, you are not investing—you are hoping.

And hope is not a strategy.
